September patch: Irish Women's Suffrage Federation
The Irish Women's Suffrage Federation was founded in 1911, and attempted to bring together the splintered suffrage societies of the north and south of Ireland. Maintaining political neutrality on the question of Home Rule, it was aligned to neither the Unionist nor Nationalist cause. However, many individual members still found themselves under pressure to take sides on the issue, which remained more urgent in the local consciousness than the parallel fight for universal suffrage.
To mark the centenary of the first women being given the vote in the U.K, I created a sew-on patch each month of 2018, marking a different element of this historic achievement. 30% of sales went to 3 charities working with women and gender equality: Bradford Women’s Aid, Birthrights and Gendered Intelligence.
