May patch: Sophia Duleep Singh

£10.00

Sophia Duleep Singh campaigned for the advancement of women in Britain, India and across the colonies. The daughter of the German-Abyssinian Bamba Müller and the Maharaja Duleep Singh, Sophia’s status as a militant suffragette, Indian princess and goddaughter of Queen Victoria provided a striking profile. A trained physician and member of the WSPU, Sophia famously refused to pay her taxes and joined the Women’s Tax Resistance League. ‘No Vote No Tax’.

To mark the centenary of the first women being given the vote in the U.K, I created a sew-on patch each month of 2018, marking a different element of this historic achievement. 30% of sales went to 3 charities working with women and gender equality: Bradford Women’s Aid, Birthrights and Gendered Intelligence.
